Valencia Tutein, co-director of Belvedere's “B Fit 4 Life” Track Club made history on the morning of Sunday, April 4, 2010, in becoming the first runner from Belvedere's track club to win an event in their division. Ms. Tutein won her division in the Oakwood Young Alumni Association (OYAA!) Dash 5K Walk/Run, which supported a scholarship initiative by Oakwood University President, Dr. Delbert Baker. The OYAA! Dash was open to alumni, friends and the Huntsville community.

Registration started at 7:00 a.m. at Oakwood University's Ashby Auditorium, and the race begun at 8:00 a.m. The race route took the participants around the Oakwood University campus, past the Oakwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, onto Adventist Boulevard, past Oakwood Adventist Academy and ending back at the Ashby Auditorium. Ms. Tutein recounted that there was a husband and wife couple that were approximately 15 meters behind her going into the last leg of the race. As they were approaching the final hill, Ms. Tutein heard the woman behind her saying that she would catch up during the run up the hill. It was the last she heard from the woman, as Ms. Tutein's superior conditioning and consistent training paid off, and took her to a comfortable victory.

After returning home to Belvedere Church with her medals, Ms. Tutein said, I encourage everyone to stay healthy and exercise, and to represent Belvedere at the General Conference Session's 5K race. She also said, I am glad to have the opportunity to lead the track club at Belvedere Church, because it allows people to have the opportunity to get in shape and stay fit.

The Belvedere “Stars” Adventurer Club and “Vanguard” Pathfinder Club successfully conducted a week–long evangelistic crusade, entitled “Jesus is Coming Again”. The meetings were held nightly from April 3–10, with the exception of Thursday night. The “Jesus is Coming Again” crusade featured eight speakers: Pathfinders Jessica Stewart, Ty Dennis, Crystalyn Black and Joshua Loiten, and Adventurers Joshua Hendrix, Gizelle McField, Darius Jones and Kerrigan Leary.

The sermon topics included, “Counterfeits”, “The Top Ten Ways to Get to Heaven”, “Special Signs” and “The Glorious Flight”. Children's choirs from the Emmanuel, First Lithonia and Stone Mountain Seventh-day Adventist Churches, respectively, were featured as musical guests. Belvedere Church's Adventist Youth Society co-director, Ave Morris, and his drama team, performed a skit before every sermon, which highlighted the topic. Michelle Johnson, and her Decorating Committee, beautified the sanctuary with colourful banners and props. Pastoral Assistant, Winsome Wint, was responsible for the attractive banner displays that welcomed guests in the foyer, and also provided special bulletin covers. Leslyn Williams, Joyce Haynes and their kitchen staff faithfully provided tasty meals for those who attended the crusade night after night.

The culmination of the “Jesus is Coming Again” crusade, was when several people answered the altar call of speaker and Belvedere Pathfinder, Joshua Loiten. Their hearts were touched by the Holy Spirit as they recommitted their lives to Christ, and purposed to be ready for His soon return. The directors of the Belvedere Adventurer and Pathfinder Clubs, attribute the success of the crusade to lots of prayer, planning and dedication by everyone involved.

Belvedere Church held its annual Women's Ministries Day, on the Sabbath of April 17, 2010, as part of the Women's Emphasis Weekend. The theme was “Being Whole – Body and Soul”.The women of Belvedere took over the service, as the Belvedere pastors took a well-deserved break. A 30–strong Women's Chorus was featured, with the talented Michelle Taffe directing.

Dr. Shellon Brooks and Mrs. Natalie Lewis delivered powerful sermons on the theme of “being whole”. Not to settle with just a sermon, Dr. Brooks and Mrs. Lewis blessed the Belvedere congregation with their gift of song.

On Sunday afternoon, the Women's Ministries Department held their “Tea with a Hattitude” tea party in the Becker gymnasium. The event was well attended. Individual tables were decorated with fancy tea sets, and the ladies were out with their fancy hats, beautiful spring dresses, many accessorized with matching gloves. The atmosphere was festive as folk sipped on tea and ate delightful delicasies, while soft music played in the background. The evening closed with contests in different categories: “Best Hattitude” contests for ladies, teen girls, and kids; and “Mr. Debonaire” contest for men and boys. It was an evening to remember.

throughout the surrounding community

The Belvedere “Stars” Adventurer Club and “Vanguards” Pathfinder Club teamed up to march through the streets of Decatur, promoting their upcoming crusade “Jesus is Coming Again”. The march was the first of several, aimed at increasing community awareness and evangelism. This crusade will run from Saturday, April 3 to Saturday, April 10, will be an unprecedented event. The Adventurers and Pathfinders will be featured exclusively, both on the pulpit and in the programs.

After a hearty Sabbath lunch in the Becker gymnasium, the crusade march got underway at approximately 3:00 p.m., on a beautiful Sabbath afternoon. The weather was sunny and mild, with an occasional breeze. It was a great day for a march! The Belvedere Adventurers, Pathfinders, their parents and supporters, were excited about going out into the Decatur community and evangelizing our brothers and sisters for Christ. The procession was led by the squad car of DeKalb Police officer Haughton.

The route took the procession from the Belvedere Church grounds, to the plaza on the corner of Covington Highway and Covington Drive. The procession stopped briefly at the plaza, which gave the parents and supporters the opportunity to pass out crusade flyers to the local businesses. From the plaza, the procession went down Beech Drive, a residential area from which some residents looked on and waved from their homes. Many more crusade flyers were handed out, inserted in mailboxes and affixed to vehicle windshields. From Beech Drive, the procession turned on Midway Drive, which led directly to the Belvedere Church grounds. The march was approximately one mile in its entirety.

Several parents and supporters who did not join the procession, were eagerly anticipating its return at the Belvedere Church compound. Upon arrival at the church, the Adventurers and Pathfinders lined up in formation. Associate Pathfinder Director, Roy Barnes, publicly acknowledged Officer Haughton for safely escorting the procession. Soon after, the clubs were dismissed and the crusade march concluded.

The evangelistic thrust and the community awareness generated by the crusade march will reverberate long into the year, as Decatur residents were reminded that “Jesus is Coming Again”.

The Social Committee, chaired by Sis. Sharon Tracey, and the General Conference 2010 Committee collaborated to put on a wonderful Valentine's Banquet. The objective of the Valentine's Banquet was to raise funds for Belvedere's General Conference preparations, and to provide a romantic “get-away” for Belvedere's married and unmarried couples.

Sis. Sharon Tracey and her Social Committee team were on location two hours prior to the event, making sure the once-undecorated gym was transformed into what seemed like a four-star restaurant in Paris. While the gymnasium was transformed, Sis. Joy Hoilett and her troupe of volunteers were hard at work in the kitchen, preparing to provide impeccable food service to over 50 guests. To many of the guests' surprise, the Belvedere pastors would serve at waiters for the evening. Pastors Rhone, Cort and Brooks' pledge for the evening was service with a smile.

The program started with a welcoming address and prayer from Pastor Cort, then Sis. Irisene Douce recited a love poem taken from King Solomon's “Song of Songs”, to set off the romantic mood for the evening.

Guests were treated to a sumptuous three-course meal, which started with the a choice of a savoury split-pea soup or a fresh garden salad. The main course was a hearty lasagna garnished with broccoli; vegans were offered a tasty pasta dish as an alternative. For dessert, guests had a choice of cherry-topped ambrosia or a delicious slice of cake.

Guests were encouraged to participate in the “Valentine's Candy Giveaway” contest, where guests wrote down their best guesses on how many pieces of candy were contained in three jars. The closest guess took home the jar of candy.

The McClains' emceed the “Newlyweds' Game”, where three couples provided much laughter and entertainment, as they were quizzed on how well they know each other. The Racines impressed, by answering all the questions right, except one. They took home a bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling apple “bubbly” as their prize. Childcare was provided for those couples who could not find a sitter for the evening.

Both young and old, married and unmarried enjoyed the Valentine's Banquet. After record snowfall the night before, banquet coordinator Sis. Sharon Tracey declared she that would “step out on faith”, trusting that the Lord would provide and the banquet would be a success. God answered her prayers.

Simone Garwood and Ryan Forrest

Twelve-year old Ryan Forrest, a member of the Atlanta Belvedere Seventh-day Adventist Church in Decatur, Georgia, is doing his part in encouraging his peers and church congregation to take an active role in preserving water. Ryan's informative essay, about water conservation, was chosen to represent Dekalb County in the 2009 Metropolitan North Georgia Planning District Clean Water Campaign Essay Contest. In his essay, Ryan emphasizes the importance of keeping our water clean by not polluting it and highlights the ways we can preserve water by doing simple things such as limiting the amount used for watering our yards and saving rainwater to water plants.

The Dekalb County Board of Commissioners honored Ryan, by proclaiming January 26 as “Ryan Forrest Day”, in Dekalb County. On that day, no homework will be assigned to the students at Mount Carmel Christian School. Ryan was also invited to share his essay with the Belvedere Church congregation.

Belvedere Church also recognized another member, Simone Garwood, who received the Northeast Region Teacher of the Year Award. The Commissioner of the Department of Juvenile Justice honored her on February 8, 2010. Mrs. Garwood is a Mathematics teacher at the Metro Regional Youth Detention Center, where she has taught confined youths for the past 3 years. She previously taught Business Studies in Clarendon, Jamaica for 10 years. Her future career goals include obtaining a Ph.D. in Education Leadership and becoming an Educational Administrator. Mrs. Garwood is grateful for the award and credits the guidance of the Lord for her success.
